Microcosm (2016)

My visual and conceptual vocabulary has emerged through my focus on the points of intersection between excess, insatiability and introspection. Therefore, each drawing in this series explores repetition, geometry and pattern. My biggest inspiration for the ‘Microcosm’ series is of course my mother. After her passing in 2011, I began to think more and more about the concepts of mortality, impermanence and decay. This is when I was drawn towards ‘Mandalas’ – a microcosm of the universe, a spiritual and ritual symbol used as an aid to meditation. Creating these patterns has helped me stabilize, integrate, and re-order my inner life.
