Remote Control – An Elegy

I don’t believe in passive entertainment – I think it’s the easiest way to becoming a zombie while you’re alive.

I used to couch-surf, I used to flip through channels or just turn on the TV to play in the background. Not anymore.

Having said that, I do like to record some shows for later ad-less viewing, watch live events or sports or catch some news every now and then. So anyway, I came a little late to the party but my husband and I just started watching ‘The Last Man On Earth’. I can’t believe that a plot that deals with themes like end of the world, loneliness and survival can be this funny. We are on Episode 4 and I loved the part where Phil carelessly scatters original art masterpieces around his house or the time when Carol and Phil break into a jewelry store and end up getting married with ten different solitaires because Carol just can’t choose and wants them all. The show does make you think – are all the valuable things you want really that valuable? How we tend to equate having more to being more.

Would these items of luxury mean anything to us if no one were to look at us flaunting/ wearing/ using/ owning them?

This is probably why I’m also fascinated by invisibility cloaks – if there is such a thing. Would invisible people still wear clothes or just their invisibility cloak or would they still walk around in designer wear underneath? Who knows? There is such a thing as comfort and those expensive clothes are quite comfortable.

Well, in any case I’m not expecting philosophy lessons from the show but I’m going to keep watching because it made me laugh, it made us both laugh a lot. So much that my husband has started calling me Carol just to get my goat.

To be honest, I never liked Will Forte from his SNL days. That McGruber sketch just wasn’t funny to me. But as the creator and lead, he’s very likable here and January Jones is just…ok no more spoilers. Go Watch!

Oh and before you go, tell me about your favorite TV show!

  1. I’m a slave to the remote and I can’t stand to watch tv when someone else has it in their hands.
